Pioneer Works in Brooklyn is hosting an exhibition “The Present is the Form of All Life: The Time Capsules of Ant Farm and LST” that will be on view through October 23, 2016.The exhibition explores the time capsule projects of seminal media art and architecture group, Ant Farm, and their contemporary successor, LST. The exhibition investigates the changeable nature of time perception, rapidly growing media obsolescence, and the shifting cultural attitudes towards preservation and privacy. The show features an archive of historical time capsules, contemporary interactive media sculptures, and a monumental inflatable environment that occupies the main exhibition space of the art center. The exhibition opens with a chronology of materials representing the time capsule works and creative process of Ant Farm and LST, including schematics, extensive architectural drawings, photographs, video documentation and more. Beyond this archival chronology, a monumental inflatable structure designed by LST is the exhibition’s main feature: “Ant Farm Media Van v.08 [Time Capsule],” which a contemporary interactive media sculpture and time capsule by LST. This structure consists a device that randomly downloads media from the participant’s smartphones during the exhibition, creating a digital time capsule itself. Digital archives and the nature of the perception is further explored through “Time Capsule Triptych,” a 25-foot-long work by LST consisting of three parts: an installation of over 4,000 digital and audio files collected through the HUQQUH, a video documentation of the original “Media Van,” and an architectural rendering of the future resting place of the contemporary media van/time capsule. The work represents a larger artistic fiction that attempts to document the past, capture the present and hypothesize the future. The exhibition is on view at Pioneer Works, 159 Pioneer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231, United States.
