On February 20, the Museum of Biblical Art (MOBIA) celebrates its 10th anniversary with the opening of “Sculpture in the Age of Donatello: Renaissance Masterpieces from Florence Cathedral.” The exhibition features 23 monumental works by Donatello, Filippo Brunelleschi, Luca della Robbia, Nanni di Banco, and others that were created for the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (better known as Il Duomo), begun in 1296. The show examines the aesthetic, cultural, and historical significance of the sculptures, most of which have never left Italy before, and their role as artistic expressions of spiritual belief. Highlights include Donatello’s gilded head, circa 1439, above. “The exhibition will present these masterpieces with all their original force, as revolutionary works of art and moving expressions of faith,” says Monsignor Timothy Verdon, director of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. “Sculpture in the Age of Donatello” is on view through June 14.A version of this article appears in the February 2015 issue of Art+Auction.
