The latest incarnation of “do it,” über-curator Hans Ulrich Obrist’s ongoing global art project, is making a long-awaited stop at the University of South Australia’s Samstag Museum February 13 through April 25. The project was conceived in Paris in 1993 during a conversation between Obrist and the artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier. Their discussion led them to solicit instructions from artists, which could be used as the point of departure for an exhibition that would be reinterpreted at each venue. Obrist invited 12 artists to send instructions, which were circulated as a book. Since then, “do it” has been enacted in 50 locations, including the Manchester Art Gallery in 2013, below, with contributions from some 400 artists, including Tracey Emin and Yoko Ono. The Australian edition is a collaboration among visitors, musicians, artists, designers, and museum staff.A version of this article appears in the February 2015 issue of Art+Auction.
