Narrative Horizons presents the work of three women—Kay Healy, Sophia Narrett and Erin M. Riley—whose contemporary studio practices are heavily influenced by traditions steeped in functional craft and the handmade.Presented in conjunction with CraftNow—a citywide exhibition examining the fluid boundaries that exist around art, design and craft—this show considers how contemporary revivals of sewing, weaving and embroidery reflect the continuing feminist interest in historical technique and play a crucial role in helping these artists understand the past while addressing identity in the present and future. Influenced by social media, popular culture and personal relationships, each woman uses traditional fiber-based and textile-derivative techniques to bridge the gap between what is perceived as functional craft and high art. Kay Healy uses hand drawn, screen-printed and stuffed fabric installations to investigate themes of home, displacement, loss and vulnerability. Kay screen prints onto fabric that she turns into amazing sculpture/ installations, her internment camp series and how her works has shifted over the last few years, to embracing the unknown, unrepresentative, and not-easily identified.Sophia Narrett’s practice is influenced by popular culture and pushes the boundaries of embroidery through narrative imagery she creates as though she were painting. She likes to tell stories with a needle and thread. Her impressively embroidered canvases, saturated with pop culture references, are a testament to her self-taught skills but also express her cheeky perspective on celebrity and collective fantasies. Almost comic-like in their narration, Narrett’s latest works are her most intricate to date.Erin M. Riley is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work focuses on women and women's issues primarily in hand-woven hand dyed wool tapestries. She utilizes social media as a tool for collecting images she translates into hand woven tapestries exploring voyeuristic perspectives.Narrative Horizons will be on display at The Moore, College of Art & Design, 2oth Street and The Parkway.
