Michael Reid will soon be hosting a solo exhibition by Rex Dupain, titled "Rex Dupain - Sunscreen Celebrities" from January 13, 2018. In the exhibition, the artist presents a series of photographs that reflect upon his vision as a global traveler uncovering the beach subcultures of Coney Island, Barcelona, and Sorrento. Despite the changes in geographical backgrounds, the pebbles, coarse sand or concrete, Dupain's depictions of people's innate attraction to the water's edge remains consistent. The works on display also explore celebrity culture, online and in the media, promoting the idea of self-reflexivity and anyone with a mobile phone has the potential to be a paparazzi.Born in 1954, Rex Dupain studied at The University of NSW. His works have been exhibited extensively around Australia and the rest of the world, including an exhibition in Paris in 2010. His work has been acquired by major galleries including the Australian Museum and the National Portrait Gallery as well as privately by people including Sir Elton John, Edmund Capon, and Baz Luhrmann. Dupain has also had several photographic books published, including Bondi to Broken Hill, Australian Images, Inside Sydney, and The Colour of Bondi. The exhibition will be on view through January 28, 2018 at Michael Reid Gallery, Mezzanine Level, 105 Kippax Street, Surry Hills, Sydney NSW 2010, Australia. For details visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/michael-reid-sydney/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the artworks.
