William Weston Gallery presents “Henri Matisse – ‘Masterpieces in Linocut’. 1943” in its winterexhibition which showcases linocut prints of classical master Henri Matisse. In 1943, Matisse created a series of linocuts inspired by his friend Henri de Montherlant’s new interpretation of the Greek mythological legends of Pasiphae and Minos. The result of his toil of 10 months, almost withoutbreak, was a creation “amongst the greatest masterpieces in linocut printmaking in the 20th Century”- Riva Castleman, late curator of Prints, Museum of Modern Art, New York. The book edition was published in 1944, which consisted of Montherlant’s text and 18 of the images by Matisse. Matisse also created different versions of the compositions during this period to publish them separately as an ‘Album of Prints’. His wish was ultimately fulfilled in 1981 by his estate. The present exhibition showcases the prints from this edition with each print numbered from the edition of 100 and bearing a blind stamp of Matisse’s initial ‘HM’ by Matisse estate. According to the gallery, it is almost twenty years after which it could exhibit such good prints.“Henri Matisse – ‘Masterpieces in Linocut’. 1943” is being presented from December 1, 2017throughout the winter at William Weston Gallery, London. For details, visit:http://www.williamweston.co.uk/ Click on the slide show to have a sneak peek of the artist’s work.
