Asia Art Archive is exhibiting the Kong Chang archive at its Hong Kong venue.The Kong Change archive consists of materials related to Kong Chang’s curatorial works, art writings, and artistic practice, as well as research materials on Chinese art and artists, with a focus on the late 1980s to early 1990s. Born in 1953, the artist and curator actively promoted Chinese avant-garde artists in Europe and the US through publications and exhibitions during the 1980s through early 1990s. He attained a visual arts scholarship to University of Bologna, Italy and would use the pen name ‘Chan, Lauk’ung’ to publish “Ten Years of the Chinese Avant-garde: Waiting for the Curtain to Fall” in Flash Art. This becomes one of the earliest English articles on Chinese avant-garde art in a major European art magazine. The artist tried to generate awareness of avant-garde artists from China as one of the curators of “Aperto” at the 1993 Venice Biennial.The Asia Art Archive is a catalyst for new ideas that enrich our understanding of the world through the collection, creation, and sharing of knowledge around recent art in Asia. They have a composition of collection with key areas of concern known as content priorities and many of these include examining sites where art history has been written in Asia through the lens of art writing, exhibitions, and pedagogy — looking at ideas that connect us beyond national borders (complex geographies).
