NF Galería, Madrid, is presenting site-specific installations and works by Chiharu Shiota. Heiress of Ana Mendieta and of a whole generation of feminist artists of the early 1970s, Chiharu Shiota works with her body as an intervention space, staging performances that deal with the connection to the earth, the past and memory. Known for its installations made with wool as the main material, the fabrics generate a mixture between repulsion and dreamlike attraction, while reviving memory, the existence of a philosophical form and its absence. The presence and absence of the artist's own body is the guiding thread of her work and becomes that which makes her understand her confrontation with the problem of defining artistic work; the artistic object and the public, the interior and the exterior. She was given wood brushes in a workshop in Switzerland that had to close after 136 years. The owner retired and despite having sought a successor for years, could not find anyone to continue with their work. She liked that the brushes have different silhouettes according to their use and this makes them look human. They were brushes without bristles, which lack utility, she thought about it while she connected the brushes with her threads, and she gave them a new life.Known for its installations made with wool as the main material, its fabrics generate a mixture between repulsion and dreamlike attraction, while reviving memory, the existence of a philosophical form and its absence. The exhibition is on view at NF Galería, Blanca de Navarra, 12. 28010, Madrid, Spain. For details, visit: http://nfgaleria.com/es/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
