Balice Hertling is currently hosting a solo exhibition by Julie Beaufils titled “La plage.”The exhibition showcases a collection of the artist’s latest paintings. These works have been created using the technique of Bokashi, which is a technique of Japanese woodblock printing in which transitions of value and lightness of a single color are achieved by applying a gradation of ink to a moistened woodblock.Speaking about the works Ana Iwataki says, “One might be tempted to speak of these paintings as being out of time. I could describe them as ethereal, as otherworldly, but they were made during years of personal and global-political reckoning. These paintings are mirages. What’s more unreal — the glass ceiling or the freedom of the white cube? Each painting invites us into a moment. Like the moment between sleep and wakefulness, or the sun on the verge of visibility, each painting hovers in the gray realm where abstraction and figuration meet. They are a call to the spiritual in order to grapple with the all too real.”Born in 1987 in Sevres, Julie Beaufils lives and works in Paris. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, she continued her studies with an MFA at the University of South California (USC). Using mostly painting as medium, she is interested in representation of feelings and the communication of emotions through her works. The recent presentations of her works include solo shows at Mendes Wood DM, São Paulo, Brazil (2017), Kunsthalle, Mulhouse, France (2016), Overduin & Co., Los Angeles, USA (2016), and Balice Hertling, Paris, France (2014 and 2016).
