Georgia Scherman Projects is currently hosting a solo exhibition by Jennifer Carvalho titled “Night Thoughts.”The exhibition features a collection of the artist’s latest paintings. “Carvalho’s work focuses on painting’s relationship to time, and cites Landscape as a genre within which this passage extends to a geologic scale, while simultaneously providing a formal structure with which to investigate material processes and pictorial space. Buttressed by an interest in the way time is treated in film, her work draws from cinematic predictions of ecological doom to explore themes of darkness and withdrawal. Her work places emphasis on material experimentation, finding fertile ground in slowed action and rumination. As a mode of working, Carvalho acknowledges the immanent contingency of painting, in which each decision might have been otherwise, or not at all,” says the gallery.Born 1980, Hamilton, Canada, the artist currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada. She has received an MFA from the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario and H. B.A, Fine Arts from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. The artist has received various grants and awards including the 2017 Visual Artist Grant, Ontario Arts Council, the 2016 Toronto Arts Council Emerging Artist Grant, Toronto Arts Council, the 2015 Project Grant, Canada Council for the Arts and many others. Her works can be found in various collections of galleries and institutions such as: RBC Collection, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, TD Bank Financial Group, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and The Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.Located on Tecumseth just south of the Queen West strip, Georgia Scherman Projects is known for being a project-based gallery.
