British sculptor Phyllida Barlow, who was awarded a CBE for services to art in the 2016 New Year’s Honours list, has been announced as the fortieth artist to be included in the ARTIST ROOMS collection which is jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS).Barlow’s first ARTIST ROOMS work is “upturned house, 2 (2012),” which the artist has gifted to the collection. Described as “a large, boldly-painted structure,” it will go on display at the Tate Modern from 14 January 2016.Phyllida Barlow said “It is, without doubt, a huge honour and very exciting to be part of ARTIST ROOMS. The fact that works from ARTIST ROOMS can be installed in impressive galleries and museums around the UK is thrilling.“I am also delighted that Louise Bourgeois is the first artist to exhibit in the ARTIST ROOMS gallery of the new Tate Modern as, for me, her work has been an inspiration since my first encounter with it in the mid-1960s.”Tate also announced that it will inaugurate a new gallery dedicated to Artist Rooms at Tate Modern with a Louise Bourgeois exhibition. The ARTIST ROOMS gallery will be one of the highlights of the new Tate Modern development when it opens on June 17, 2016.The Artist Rooms exhibitions are based on works drawn from, and acquired through, a collection assembled by Anthony d’Offay which was donated to the nation in 2008 and is jointly owned and managed by National Galleries of Scotland and Tate.
