Mizuma Gallery in Singapore has tasked a group of nine artists and artist teams to explore artistic mediums of their choosing for the gallery’s upcoming meta-art exhibition “Constituent Concreteness.”The participating artists have taken advantage of the show’s theme to work in a range of unconventional materials, including dead butterflies, beeswax, volcanic ash, and tulle. The collective result challenges visitors to reconsider the narrow categories of traditional art, like painting or sculpture. One representative work on display is the found-object sculpture “Three Wishes,” 2014, from Japanese artist duo Ken + Julia Yonetani. This piece, a butterfly-winged glass figurine within a glass dome, accompanied by a music box, defies easy categorization, straddling the line between strange curio and work of art. While many of the artists exhibited at “Constituent Concreteness” make statements about the nature of art through the use of nontraditional mediums, others have offered new takes on familiar materials. Indonesian artist Dita Gambiro examines the statements people make through the clothing they wear in her 2016 “US” series, for which she has fabricated sets of clothing out of the semi-transparent material tulle; while ceramicist Albert Yonathan Setyawan presents his handmade pottery, intentionally designed to imitate mass-produced ceramics. The show also features work from Aditya Novali, Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo, Maharani Mancanagara, Syaiful A. Garibaldi, Miyanaga Aiko, and Luke HENG.“Constituent Concreteness” runs through May 22 at Mizuma Gallery in Singapore.
