Inspired from the novel of the same name by Japanese author Kobo Abe, “The Face of Another” is an exhibition of a selection of works by various artists that show the destabilizing established boundaries between object and subject or human and world in different ways. The works are being exhibited at Galleri Susanne Ottesen through August 11, 2018.Published in 1964, Abe’s novel “The Face of Another” is a “study of fluid identities and the disruption of a hard drawn distinction between body and matter,” writes the gallery. The general plot of the book revolves around a scientist (who is also the narrator) who accidently harms his face during an experiment. He then creates a mask to obtain a new face and identity and during this process he reflects on the fluidity of identities and genders and considers the purpose of objects becoming part of the body. In this exhibition “Face of Another” is a representation of the idea of another such as being an object or person and becoming a physical part of them or with them. The face is generally perceived as something linking to humanness and in Abe’s novel this is replaced with a mask.In the exhibited works the actual face or image of the head only appears in Emil Westman Hertz’ sculpture made out of newspaper. In other works by other artists the relation to the novel is more indirect conveying a sense of forcefulness on becoming part of a body. The existing relation between nature, body, and our material surroundings allows us to comprehend the possibility of matter and non-human entities in being active. According to the gallery, “‘Face of Another’ is not an exhibition about masks. But it is in various ways dealing with material as well as digital masking, camouflage, defenses, and illusions. It deals with a modelling, a modification, and a choreographing of the objects’ integration in and with each other’s as well as the viewers’ bodies.”Curated by Nanna Stjernholm Jepsen, the artists featured in this exhibition include, Nanna Abell, Ib Braase, Johan Martin Christiansen, Christine Overvad Hansen, Emil Westman Hertz, Silas Inoue, Sandra Mujinga, Nina Nowak, Kirsten Ortwed, and Julia Phillips. This exhibition is on view through August 11, 2018 at Galleri Susanne Ottesen, Gothersgade 49, 1123 Copenhagen K – Denmark. For details, visit: http://www.susanneottesen.dk/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
