Bau-Xi Gallery will soon be hosting a group exhibition titled “A Deeper Shade of Blue” from July 7, 2018.This curated exhibition of selected works by gallery artists invites artists and viewers alike to engage with the fascinating psychological, emotional and environmental qualities attributed to the depths of the color blue. The exhibition will be featuring various artists including Vicki Smith, Barbara Cole, Jamie Evrard, and Joshua Jensen-Nagle, among others.Vicki Smith is a Canadian painter known for her paintings of female figures that explore the possibilities and limitations of gravity. Often shown suspended in rippling water; twisted and upside-down, falling into and out of the picture plane, these figures are often so precariously placed upon the canvas that they threaten to slip away or dissolve. Though rarely grounded, they are always balanced. Vicki Smith studied fine art at the Ontario College of Art. She lives and works in Toronto.Barbara Cole is an award-winning Canadian photographer who is known for her distinct underwater photography. Cole has exhibited internationally and is extensively collected by both public and private institutions. Cole has worked internationally on commercial projects and has created several large-scale commissions, including installations for the atrium at the M. Lau Breast Cancer Centre in Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital and for Trump Hollywood in Hollywood Beach, Florida. Her series “Underworld” was exhibited at the Canadian Embassies in Tokyo and Washington, D.C.Evrard is known for creating rich still life and floral paintings using oil paint, monotype and watercolors. Her paintings on canvas, panel and copper are composed of many layers of gestural brushstrokes, rendered in bright pigments to reflect the dynamism of her signature floral subject matter. Her compositions often incorporate dark swatches of deep navy and black alongside bright whites and pastel hues to evoke the playful interaction of shadow and light.Joshua Jensen-Nagle is a prominent Canadian photographer who widely recognized for his evocative beach photography and nostalgic scenes of European landmarks. Jensen-Nagle bases his successful full-time art practice in Toronto. He studied photography at Ryerson University from 1999-2003. His works are often inspired by his frequent travels abroad. The exhibition will be on view through July 21, 2018, at Bau-Xi Gallery, 3045 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6H 3J6, Canada.
