Coming soon at Tim Van Laere Gallery is Ben Sledsens’ “Two Trees” in Antwerp, Belgium. The exhibition that will start on September 6 will be on view through October 20, 2018.“His practice divides, consciously if not skillfully, into traditional genres such as portraits, interiors and landscapes. Sledsens invites us to consider the thoughts of people, places and events that populate his vivid scenarios, whether they exist in private or public realms, in personal or shared experiences. Sledsens translates his personal subject matter into poetic or romantic images, with an open beginning and ending, meant for interpretation by the spectator,” the gallery writes.Central to the work is his profound understanding of painterly tradition. His large-format canvases exist in a long tradition of painting that reference Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. “His works are part of a bigger poetic universe that is all his own,” the gallery adds. His paintings are characterized by contrasting textures of materials, such as matte acrylic, bright oil, and spray paint. In tandem with his paintings, he has also produced a body of companion works on paper. Ben Sledsens (born in 1991) lives and works in Antwerp. He has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Nino Mier Gallery, Greenacre Avenue, and at the Tim Van Laere Gallery. He has received Masters Salon in Painting in 2016. His earlier significant shows include “Before the crow crows,” at Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles, and “Pulling Ropes and Ringing Bells,” at Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp. The exhibition will be on view from September 6 through October 20, 2018, at Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp, Belgium.
