Flinders Lane Gallery is showcasing a pop-up exhibition “Subterrain: The Organic Sublime within Contemporary Practice” at Collins Place Gallery as part of Melbourne Art Week, 2018. The exhibition is on view through August 5, 2018.The exhibition features work of visual artists Jacob Leary, Zac Koukoravas, Hannah Quinlivan, Agneta Ekholm, Melinda Schawel, Annika Romeyn, and Dan Lorrimer.“The exhibition aims to provide audiences with a highly tactile and intimately immersive arts experience, inspired broadly by ideas of organic forms and systems found beneath the earth’s surface,” the gallery writes. In “Subterrain” the artists “use natural formations and geological structures as points of departure sharing a common interest in challenging the limits of their chosen practices, to achieve highly complex and utterly unique artworks,” the gallery adds. Highlights from Jacob Leary’s work include “rich seam of riotous color” and painter and printmaker Melinda Schawel “offers panoramic view of ecology in action.”The movement of the earth’s surface is the subject of Dan Lorrimer’s large metal monoliths; Zac Koukoravas’ artwork reflects the “the glinting beauty of precious stones.” Hannah Quinlivan’s painstakingly woven LED lights look like “phosphorescent jewels.” Other significant works include Canberra-based printmaker Annika Romeyn’s “meticulous micro/macro sketches,” and Agneta Ekholm’s “intuitive abstraction work.”Multi-disciplinary artist Hannah Quinlivan was a finalist in the 2014 Alice Prize and Winner of the Shire of East Pilbara Residency Award, 2014. Quinlivan is represented in number of collections including the National Gallery of Australia, The Australian High Commission (Singapore), and The Australian National University. In 2012, Jacob Leary completed a Masters of Fine Arts degree at the Hobart School of Art, creating a multimedia installation exploring the exponential growth of technology in contemporary culture.Agneta Ekholm’s sensitively layered paintings evoke a myriad of emotional and cognitive responses. She has completed a major commission for the newly opened Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Guangzhou, China, Marriott Hotel Beijing, China, and has artwork in the JW Marriott Hotel, Miami, Florida, and Marriott Dallas Market Center, Texas.Koukoravas was recently acquired by the Justin Art House Museum (JAHM) and his work featured in JAHM’s 2018 group exhibition “Black & White & Red All Over.”Dan Lorrimer is a designer maker living and working in Canberra working predominantly in sculpture and product design. The exhibition is on view through from July 24 through August 5, 2018, at Collins Place Gallery, Melbourne.
